Local LGBTQ+ Happenings

  • Foothills Rainbow Connection is an organization that has been advocating for LGBTQ+ awareness and support in the community for years. There is an extensive list of LGBTQ resources on their website. They also hosted Okotoks' first Pride in the Park event, and are Okotoks Pride committee members.  Check out their Facebook page to get connected with some of their events and initiatives: facebook.com/FoothillsRainbowConnection/

  • Okotoks United Church is in the process of becoming an affirming church.  In addition to being members of the Okotoks Pride committee, they offer spiritual guidance, and individual and family counselling to support all LGBTQ+ folks.  Find out more about their affirming services here: okunited.ca/programs/affirming-ministry

Regional LGBTQ+ Connections

  • Calgary Outlink is an organization with lots of programs, resources, and events put on by, and for, the LGBTQ+ regional community.  Check out their website here, their event calendar here, or their list of community connections here.

  • Calgary's Centre for Sexuality has tons of education programs and resources for LGBTQ+ youth. They are huge supporters of the school-based Gender Sexuality Alliances all over Alberta, and host an amazing GSA Conference for all Albertan Youth every year. They also run a queer youth summer camp, Camp FyreFly, every year, and offer essential counselling and STI testing services to everyone who needs them.   • Skipping Stone is another awesome Calgary-based organization supporting trans and queer individuals.  They offer mentoring, gender-affirming clothing, transportation, recreation opportunities and more for all trans folk in the area.  Check them out here: skippingstone.ca/

LGBTQ+ Culture

Pride in the Foothills region and surrounding area is more vibrant and beautiful than ever!  There are tons of cool things going on that we encourage you to check out.  See a few of our recommendations below:

  • Start with learning more about Calgary's queer history!  Researcher Kevin Allen has put together this comprehensive overview: https://calgarygayhistory.ca/

  • Calgary's Queer Arts Society has tons of engaging and exciting collaborative work you can check out.  Their yearly queer fairy tales film festival is an annual highlight!  They also offer opportunities for queer youth to get involved in the local art scene, with mentorship programs and classes.  Learn more at their website: https://www.calgaryqueerartssociety.com/
